Touhou 12 Announced
It’s Reitaisai season, and we all know what that means: new games.
This afternoon, ZUN officially announced the release of the twelfth game in the Touhou franchise: 東方星蓮船 ~Undefined Fantastic Object. (Hereinafter referred to as UFO.)

Commemorate! Touhou Project No. 12: Touhou Seirenbune
Well, scratch that. Don’t commemorate. Touhou Project No. 12:
“Touhou Seirenbune ~Undefined Fantastic Object.”
It feels the same as always, but I’ve fixed and balanced scoring. It’s fairly challenging.
I looked into difficulty a bit. Mm, it’s a bit easier now.
The story, in a nutshell:
“A rumor began in Gensokyo that, ever since some time before Spring, a treasure ship has been spotted in the sky. ‘What great luck!’ thought some, and scrambled to board that ship. That’s why there were black shadows flying at high speed behind the ship.”
Something light-hearted like that. Sanae’s playable in this game, so that makes three. Each person had two objectives, but chose to chase the treasure ship (?) flying at high speeds. It’s an almost astonishingly light-hearted plot… but.

The game is slated for completion Summer 2009.
There will be demo CDs for sale at Reitaisai, on March the 8th. If you’re interested, bring your pot stand or something.
The demo will be three stages, just like always. Actually, this game is ridiculously conventional. I started feeling nostalgic at some point.
That’s the translation. Cryptic as always. It does seem seperate bombs do make a return, a throwback to the pre-MoF days. That’s all the information we have for now. Look foward to it!
PS: I do not know the official romanization of UFO’s Japanese name. I apologize if it is incorrect; ZUN failed to state an official pronounciation.

where did you get the separate bombs part, I hear people talking about it , but can’t find out were they get it from.

From what I’m getting from the HUD, order of labels go like this from the top:

Power (for shot strength)
Points (value of point items)

Now if you take a look at the 3rd HUD screenshot, you’ll see a bubble with power and points in it. My guess is that since bombs are now a separate stock, power isn’t going to go down from bomb use, and since power is relatively easy to max (from previous games), there needs to be a balance by UFOs having to STEAL power and points from you. If you don’t shoot it down, say goodbye to whatever they stole. Not sure how the UFO meter at the bottom left plays out.
That’s my analysis anyway.

I have a different theory. Getting UFO items as seen in the last screenshot, will summon the UFO, which if destroyed, gives the items that are listed in the bubble. This game IS about treasure (and UFOs) after all.

Unless it only looks like that because of the scaling, I do believe ZUN’s gotten back in touch with his artistic abilities (which have been kinda dying lately).

Judging from that picture of Reimu, I’d say the art’s finally getting better.

Let’s see. Sanae is a playable character, yay! Is that really ZUN’s art in the 4th picture, Reimu looks pretty good!? o_O Unique bombs, uh, didn’t they return in SA already? Not to Master Spark-levels, but they were still WAY better than generic-bullet-destroying-circles.

HOURAISAN Kaguya anyone? Being “Lunatic” and “Alien” are quite different though.
Sanae… a little “traditional” flavored I think. Poor Izayoi Sakuya…
Separated bomb slot… I’d rather have Th10′s “1 extra power slot”(power_max=5, drone_max=4) system, which makes me feel safer (since P’s are relatively easier to regain, while Bomb’s a separated item).
As for shots, Sanae’s shot looks “WTF?” when compared to Reimu’s “Mahjong” and Marisa’s lasers we got used to.
The demonstrated danmaku’s are kinda weak BTW.
It is Seirensen.
