Touhou Anime Set to Release During C75

DVD Cover

Finally, after years of teaser trailers, Maikaze‘s doujin Touhou anime, titled 夢想夏卿 (Musou Kakyou), is finally due out at Comiket 75, on Monday, the 29th of December.

Multiple controversies have surrounded the announcement of the anime. Most notably, ZUN himself voiced his displeasure and slight concern on his blog, citing concerns that doujin anime may be misinterpreted as official goods. He was also concerned that the rapid expansion of the Touhou franchise will lead to a slew of Touhou fans who haven’t played the actual games at all.

To make matters worse (for ZUN, that is), high-profile seiyuu have been hired to voice the main characters. Where Maikaze got the connections or the money to hire said seiyuu remains a mystery. Here is the cast list, along with other notable roles each seiyuu has played before:

Nakahara Mai as Hakurei Reimu (Notable roles: Rena, Higurashi series, Furukawa Nagisa, Clannad)

Sawashiro Miyuki as Kirisame Marisa (Notable roles: Shinku, Rozen Maiden, Kurenai Shinkurou, Kure-nai, Aoba Tsugumi, Kannagi)

Fujimura Ayumi as Shameimaru Aya

Takahashi Mikako as Patchouli Knowledge (Notable roles: Nishizawa Ayumu, Hayate no Gotoku!)

Tanaka Rie as Izayoi Sakuya (Notable Roles: Too many to list; includes Chii, Chobits, Minna-Dietlinde Wilcke, Strike Witches, and, ironically, Maria, Hayate no Gotoku!)

Tsuji Ayumi as Remilia Scarlet (Notable Roles: Orihara Kozue, Chaos;Head)

Toyosaki Aki as Suika Ibuki (Notable Roles: Su, Shugo Chara)

Inoue Kikuko as Narrator (Notable Roles: Belldandy, Ah! My Goddess, and, ironically, Narrator, Potemayo!)

Mysteriously, Meiling’s seiyuu remains unannounced. No one seems to know why this is.

DVDs will be on sale at the Maikaze booth during Comiket 75 on Monday, the 29th of of December, for 2500 yen.

worrisome indeed. i’d really like to know how Maikaze got the money and the connections though. I mean, one or two of them would be moderately difficult, but a whole cast?

Omg…they really hired popular seiyuu..can’t wait what would the voice of patchouli be..
what’s the main plot of the story (is it base on the games?)
and how many episodes (less then 6 assuming its a OVA?)

Reminds me of FLIPFLOPs art. Even if they have a bunch of good VA’s, if the actual animation itself is sucky, and they butcher the original story, I doubt it’ll be received in a good way. By using a big franchise such as Touhou, it’s either a hit-or-miss. That being said, if they screw up and receive much hate they might have problem reimbursing the money used to hire the VAs with the DVD sales. But the price for each one doesn’t seem to be much… so it’s really a wonder how they manage to hire that many popular VAs. Unless they volunteered for it, which is most unlikely, or it’s freaking cheap to hire a VA there.

    tl;dr : it’s a conspiracy. :v

PS: Don’t worry ZUN, there will still be people that plays the game. One little doujin-made anime won’t do much harm.

PSS: Replace *VA* with *seiyuu* if you please.

I wonder whether they will sell the dvd online cuz i can’t go to japan this month…

Maybe they hire those seiyuus because they have confident they will boost sales enuff to cover the costs of hiring them? anyway, no harm done to us fans xD

Think this animation may even attract more ppl to play the games.

The smartest thing for Maikaze to do is to have had the money before hand. But that’s just as doubtful as the strange sudden ability to have such a voice cast, like everyone else has mentioned. I still shake in epileptic excitement as I realize I’ll be able to hear Marisa speaking (with one of my favorite VAs to boot).

And yes, I use VA. I never understand why people get so irritated by that. Tomfoolery that be.

It is best to see this as just an animated doujin. I think like ZUN said many will probably be disappointed.

    December 22nd, 2008 | 11:16 am

I SERIOUSLY doubt any of the VA are paid to do voice-over. It’s more like people trying to do the “land grab”, establishing themselves as the de facto voice for characters. That way, if the “for sure” commercialization happens one day, they can cash in again and again and again, considering the vitality of the Touhou juggernaut .

In the mean time, more publicity as a result of doing voice over for Touhou = mutually benefitual for both side.

I dont see why people cant think maybe the seiyuu’s might have volunteered. Maybe they’re fans of Touhou as well. Its a Doujin anime, so its made by fans for fans. If i ever became a big manga-ka or Seiyuu, that certainly wouldnt stop me from persuing the natural pleasures of Doujins.

    December 22nd, 2008 | 8:38 pm

I agree with ZUN. There might be a bunch of new fans that think they know something about Touhou.

  15. Psieye
    December 23rd, 2008 | 6:42 am

If they craft the plot in such a way that it’s impossible to fully understand what’s going on without basic Touhou lore, then I don’t think we’ll get a wave of new fans who think they know all there is to Touhou. The cast is also very small compared to the full breadth of Touhou. Frequently you will see some of the cast being animated interacting with others (I mean, PCB characters don’t seem to be on the cast list) – something which should make newbies thrist for more knowledge.

It could go excellently. It could go ok. It could go horribly. I won’t hold a strong expectation towards any outcome. The one question I do have is what Danmaku scenes there will be (if any).

    December 23rd, 2008 | 7:27 am

who cares about how they got the seiyu casting if the art sucks that badly? school days eroge had more frames that this… it can’t be called anime, it’s a flash. ZUN has more to be disappointed than the reasons he stated. it’s bad enough that we have IOSYS ruining touhou, and now this.

  18. December 23rd, 2008 | 4:11 pm

The problem in my opinion is that people tend to take fan-made stuff as official, whereas the only officila stuff is what ZUN has participated or has accounted as true, therefore everything else is pure specuation though some is fun some is just stupid/lame it’s not part of the official stuff, but, it’s harder to get to know the official things, specially for us non-japanese speaking people, we have to rely on the few sources we can get.
Going strait to the point it’s just another doujinshi, so nothig will come out of this (at least not to big)

Has anyone ever been to youtube and found out people asking: “what anime is this music from” in several of the fan made video music clips just to get a bunch of negative feedback and people saying “It’s from a game”?

    yeah… You know what’s coming…

1 – What anime is this music from? feedback = +1
    Re: 2 – It’s from the anime “Musou Kakyou”. feedback = +56
    Re: 3 – No it’s not! It’s from a game called touhou! feedback = -2
Re: 2 – The game came after the anime you douche! feedback = 0
*(Re: 3 – Is that so? Take it easy! feedback = >9000)
*(Re: 2 – What the F are you on about? feedback = >-9000)

I wish that the replys with the * happened for real… with the proper feedback.

What’s sad about touhou is that 90% of the fans don’t even play the games themselves. They know all about stuff like Reimu’s armpits and shits, they know all about the music and whose theme belongs to who, but ask them about the games themselves and they’ll have zero knowledge about them.

Hell, even doujin artists write in their works “Oh, I’ve never actually played the touhou series but Marisa x Alice (or Patch or Reimu) was just sooooooo cute so I decided to draw a story about them!”

    tl;dr = Fanon sucks.

    December 26th, 2008 | 10:24 pm

Big deal if this fan stuff sucks , the canon ones aren’t that intriguing(some are , but not all ) . WIthout these doujins , touhou won’t have the fame it would had . They deserved some credit .

    December 27th, 2008 | 8:19 am

I’ll acknowledge the first half of ZUN’s concerns. Uninformed people are far more likely to think an anime is official material than they are manga. However, the second issue is a non-issue. There are already tons of Touhou fans who have never played the games. In that respect there is no difference between this anime and the many doujin works already released.

Let the fans come. Many of them will be drawn to play the games after first being exposed to Touhou, like I was.

I first heard of the Touhou Project when I watched the Nico Nico Douga Medley. I liked the songs and fan art, and I became curious about the games (which I have now). The anime will end up creating more fans, and they will want to play the original games as well. Don’t worry so much.

“Mysteriously, Meiling’s seiyuu remains unannounced. No one seems to know why this is.”

anyway, though i haven’t watch the trailer or the anime itself, i believe the famous seiyuu will, undoubtedly make the Maikaze’s doujin Touhou anime looks much more legit to people who didn’t familiar with touhou. and since ironically, more people are familiar with those seiyuu and not Touhou franchise itself, let alone ZUN, his worries that the doujin anime being considered as official anime will surely happens.
In worst case, Maikaze may even be considered as the creator of Touhou by those new fan….

about his concern that “the rapid expansion of the Touhou franchise will lead to a slew of Touhou fans who haven’t played the actual games at all”, is i believe a little too late.

Well, how good this will be is yet to be seen. I am not sure if i will watch it, going to wait what the people will say about it.
The only Touhou Anime that i will ever watch is one that ZUN drew himself and voiced the characters himself. Mayber not the last part but the first.

China’s voice wasn’t announced because she didn’t say anything.
I thought it was pretty good, I lol’d at a couple of lines and I really liked Patchy’s and Reimu’s voices.

The danmaku is less danmaku and more the kind of thing you’d see in one of Tohonifun’s comics.

    I’d give it a thumbs-up.

The (damaku?) battle sucked. For a stage 1 battle, it was very brief. Also, the music was horrible. Patchouli’s wall was weird. I think it would have been better if they just omitted the battle.
Most of the episode was a bit slowly-paced and boring, but I guess that’s expected for the first episode of anything.
There were a few funny parts and the acting was good.

Overall, it was a huge disappointment for me.

    As for the seiyuu–
In Japan, even the top seiyuu get paid like s****. It probably wouldn’t cost Maikaze all that much for a one-shot deal.

    December 29th, 2008 | 10:30 pm

@Joe: Well, what do you expect? You went in with a pessimistic attitude, so it’s only likely that you think it sucks. I myself, think they did pretty darn well for what they have.

    I love it!

Yes, the character design is not that good, but the animation and the background are amazing for fan made anime. I dont feel like an anime with low budget (you know which anime XD), the production is well done.

The fact if some of you are dissapointed, but please give it a chance, this is fan made. Maikaze got way to hire famous seiyuu but it doesn’t mean they can hire talented and pro animator, director, and character designer, right?

Overally, this anime is a sucess. ZUN ACTUALLY did not dislike this, he only worried if new fan will thinking if this anime is an official one. ZUN also said he is okay with this anime but Maikaze must treat this anime like doujin, to limit the way of distribution and advertizing just like doujinshi or doujin game.

I’m waiting for episode 2, and probably Inoue Kikuko will be voicing Yukari Yakumo.

Hm, wasn’t that bad honestly for something fan-made. And I think that’s what people keep forgetting. This is a doujin work. Purely fan-made. Did you honestly expect it to be THAT good? I was honestly surprised at how good the backrounds turned out. It was a bit jarring contrasted to the characters themselves, but I did enjoy how well animated, oddly enough, the battle was (I wouldn’t regard it a danmaku as much as it was just a battle, I mean it was more along the lines of IaMP/SWR than the ZUN works).

Honestly, for a fan-work it was pretty good, at least better than I expected this work to actually be.

Does the VA sound familiar of Kannagi’s VA? Or am I wrong.

  37. January 1st, 2009 | 12:40 am

The battle in the first ep seemed pretty IaMP influenced to me.
The wall was a bit wierd, but you’ve gotta remember that Patchouli is capable of many kinds of magic. =P
Anyone noticed the “Wikipedia” book (just before they entered the library)? So thin!

I heard it was going to be about 3 eps long, is that true?

Imo, there should be some “advertisment” of ZUN’s shumps in the anime, and all will be well.

Wow, how people over-react. I was able to watch the episode yesterday, and I thought it was pretty good for a fan effort. The art wasn’t amazing, true, but seriously, if one was expecting Sunrise/BONES-level in the first place would be sorely disappointed, as again, this was a fan effort. I was happy enough that we got 90’s-quality detail, as it were.

I have to say, the backgrounds were gorgeous. And slice of life? Tickle me surprised, as I’ve become quite fond of the genre in my ‘old age’, as it were.

It was actually nice, lol. Though I wasn’t happy with some of the voices(didn’t quite match the character image) overall it was a work well done. Character design definitely needs to be polished, though. In contrast to the background it looks almost like it is pasted on from somewhere else.

I only have one thing to say about the controveries….ZUN obviously doesn’t know the popularity of his games if he is worried so. Personally, I would monitor the project and start getting papers signed to insure the project will profit him. Then he would be able to make even bigger danmaku games and possibly even hire some company to make limited Touhou figures…..that’s just one idea though. So much more can become of Touhou if he allows this anime. I have already seen episode one, and I absolutely love it. It is just too bad ZUN has an issue with it……oh well. Whatever happens happens I suppose. ^_^V
