Hellsinker English Patch v1.0 Complete!

The Death is waiting for you. Please don’t disappoint him.

Hellsinker English translation patch

We’ve taken a break from Touhou games to translate another doujin shooter: Hellsinker, released by the circle Ruminant’s Whimper at Comiket 72. For those that have run into it before, it’s notable for the complexity of the game’s systems and for the near incomprehensible Engrish that features in many of the game’s graphics.

With that in mind, we’ve completed translation of the in-game text and the HTML manual accompanying the game. The existing “Engrish” graphics have (for the most part) been left as is since they’re a part of the game’s charm, but the actual story elements have been translated into English – although it’s arguable how much sense the story makes even in Japanese, so consider yourself warned. Read on past the break for more information on installation.

The game will need to be patched to version before the English patch can be applied; you can find the patch at the Ruminant’s Whimper website — just enter the site and look for the link at the bottom of the page with “” in the link text. To install the patch, point the installer at a folder, then copy all of the files from the new folder that’s created in that directory into your main Hellsinker install folder.

Once this patch has been applied, you can install the English patch (available at this link or by clicking on the image above) by simply pointing it at the folder where Hellsinker is installed.

Major thanks go out to our long-suffering coder mauve, Nazerine for translation of near-incomprehensible Japanese, Halbarad for image editing, and special thanks to TMN for help with various elements of the patch.

Keep your dignity.

And if anyone gets confused about it, you have to turn on dialogue in the options before it will show up in the game, and even then just for Deadliar.

AWESOME! I’d thought this game would never get a translation but I’m glad to be proven wrong. Thank you all for your work!

Sorry for going off topic, but I’m having problems with patching RemiDoki on my computer. I have the update patch, and I extracted its contents into the game’s folder, but I always get an error message or something saying the patch won’t update the game. Can someone please help me on this? =(

That game’s patch unpacks to a separate directory, which means you need to manually copy the files over to the main dir for it to be patched up.

    Same as this game, really.

@mauve: I tried that, still the game’s patch is still being a pain.

Don’t know what the problem is then. Should bel ooking for data.akn(about 55MB), patch1.akn, and patch2.akn.

Regarding Hellsinker things, we’ll likely be doing an update in a couple days to fix a texturing bug and a few typos.

Will you guys translate the game’s successor? I posted it in the Hellsinker thread.

@mauve: When I downloaded the game’s patch, it didn’t have the “data.akn” and I re-downloaded again to make sure yet the download didn’t provide that. Can someone provide a download for it?

That’s because that’s the game itself and not the patch, NoName.

TheOtaku143110 you didn’t link anything and I still don’t know what you’re talking about. The author of the game isn’t even working on a shmup right now.

I’m getting a blank screen when I run it in full screen mode… I’ve tested HS.exe and it works fine, only HS_e refuses to draw anything. The music will still play. I’m running version Any help?

First I’ve heard of it. Did you try hs_dx9build.exe ? Because that is the executable for hs.exe is

Yeah that’s from a different circle. It’s not a successor. Or even related.

This isn’t a useful update, because the links to the game are ALL dead

Any idea why the up-down numpad keys are inverted?

Holy carp, seriously? Totally unexpected. So now that this has happened, at any point are there indications of song titles? Or music credits at all? I’d love to know what the composer called all the songs, because it’s a really interesting soundtrack.

    June 4th, 2012 | 1:45 pm

Nope, nothing at all on the music titles anywhere in the game’s data or manual. I looked! Closest things are the filenames, which are mostly just like hs_stg3b or whatever.

Maybe you could try the invincibility hex patch Mauve mentioned in

Just in case anyone needs the numpad up-down fix, here’s the offsets and values to change:
    0038075C: 50 -> 48
    00380773: 48 -> 50

To disable the annoying blinking “REPLAY” text when recording replays, create an empty file called “nodispreplaysign.text” in the game directory (no idea why it’s not a config screen setting).

the english patch works great. however, when you start “the way of all flesh” it crashes. the error basically says “HELLSINKER\model\ ??????? The system cannot find the file specified .” original version works fine still.

    June 18th, 2012 | 10:21 am

That really sounds like the game is not patched correctly, as that is one of the files included with the patch.

The patch itself unpacks to a separate directory and needs to be copied over, it sounds like you didn’t do that.

As one of the people who purchased this at comiket 72 and dutifully played it for hours and hours until finally beating it, I salute you.

This is one of the best shooters ever made, but because of a learning curve that is more like a sheer cliff few people will ever really know its awesomeness.
I think I understand the plot a little but the english translation should make things clearer… right? :)

Regarding comment #26 – I was getting the same missing error. Turns out I had patched HS with 1.009b patch instead of the 1.009 patch. Once I applied the correct patch, the error went away and I was able to play “The Way of All Flesh.”

    this is sooooo frustrating

@30 – To patch the game properly, you need to select the folder which contains the file “HS.EXE”

I also had the problem regarding the program crash when starting EX Stage 2. I solved this by downloading the 1.009 patch again, then copying the contents of the patch’s “/model” folder to Hellsinker’s “/model” folder. I don’t believe it matters whether or not your game is already patched to English.

  33. August 19th, 2013 | 7:46 am

I’m having the same problem as OrdiNeu. Launching HS_e.exe in fullscreen yields nothing but a blank screen. Running it in a window works just fine, but I’m not doing that on a 1366×768 monitor.

I’ve installed Hellsinker, patched it up (replaced the installled game’s directory files with the ones inside the patch and stuff) with the 1009 thing (not the 1009b, since one of the replies mentioned that it crashes the game at a certain point or something), and installed the english patch where Hellsinker is installed…
But still, the “HS_e.exe” thing won’t start up, a grey rectangular window will pop up for a brief second and then go away, doing nothing.
However, “hs.exe” works perfectly fine… technically talking.
