Great Fairy Wars English Patch v1.0 Released!

Great Fairy Wars English Patch

What’s that? Something special about today? The date, you say? Oh, is it the STRONGEST day?

Then what better day for an English patch starring everyone’s favorite ice fairy? Version 1.0 of the English patch for Great Fairy Wars is here! You can download it by clicking on the image above, or on this foxhole.

To install, just point it to the folder containing your TH 12.8 installation and hit Patch.

As with the other English patches, spellcard names in the Results screen will appear scrambled until the card has been seen again in the game, at which point the card name will appear correctly in English.

Thanks go out to all the folks that put this patch together:

  • the translation team over at the Touhou wiki
  • Kirisome Marila and SirAlex for editing
  • Mr_Alert, mauve, and bofh for code work/hacking
  • Halbarad for images
  • SageAcrin, Beany_one, and Talaysen for beta testing

Typo: “Hyper inflection” has the 2nd word in lower case. It should be capitalized. (Even then ‘inflection’ is a guess at best.)
TL issue: Light Attack “Shoot the Little Moon”. IN uses ‘Light Blast’. If you choose to prefer “Light Attack”, then I will change previous entries.

    Nice work, and great timing!

Next time I’ll check the wiki to make sure no one’s working on it before I go ahead and translate all the images……

Thanks for your efforts in timing. This is exactly what Cirno needs to perpetuate her day beyond foolish musings of a millennial holiday. Besides, the “real day” would’ve been something like 09/09/0909.

It’s a shame she could never post here, what with the spam protection method and all.

Well, to the other “team,” sometimes there are updates, I suppose? Perhaps your work will play into that eventually if you bring your translations and conclusions together.

I don’t mean to sound like a jerk here, but another website (shrinemaiden.org) was working on an English patch as well, and I was involved with it. We had all the translation and image editing done, but then this patch comes out of nowhere and pretty much means it was all for nothing. Now, I’m not mad over this as much as you would think (this is a wonderful patch you have here), but I’d like to make a request.
I don’t want any work to go to waste, for either team. If the creators of this patch could release the code and files, we could combine the best of both, and end up with a better patch overall that would make everyone happy! There’s definitely some things that your patch does better, but also some strange errors and mistranslations.
If this is too unreasonable, I’ll just ask you to release the source or documentation, so that other modifications could be made, or it could be translated into other languages. I understand that you guys worked really hard on this, so you should let other people use it to its full potential!
Thanks in advance, even if this doesn’t end up working.

Azure Lazuline: I don’t speak for gs.org here (in fact the only work I had on th128 was related to the config program), so don’t take my word here as gospel, but I think you’re being a bit silly.

First of all, gs.org has done patches for the games a number of times before. IaMP, SWR, Soku, MoF, SA, UFO, and now 128. DS was skipped partially because it doesn’t really need it and mostly because it’s a lot of work, both on the hacking and translating sides. You had to kind of expect some effort on the part of this site to try something. If you really wanted to know if they were working on it, you could have just asked someone involved. This sort of thing also happens all the time in fansubs, and I can generally agree that we don’t really want to create a situation where there is unnecessary competition involved, it gets to be a little too much work for everyone involved.

Second, I can understand having some issues with the translations and whatnot, it’s basically inevitable that there’s issues, either real or perceived(faily, hurrdurr). Nobody’s perfect, as evidenced by somehow everyone missing the point values, and there’s no translation effort that will make everyone happy. But they’ve already stated that they’ll do an update to this patch and they’re taking translation errors into consideration. So mention them and they’ll get them fixed and hey, that’s cool. (for the record, I really don’t understand people who complain about the credits not being translated/edited, or the artsier title screens being left alone. It’s not a big deal, and some of them are artsy enough that it’d be worth leaving them alone for that.)

As the sole hacker/packager on the fighting games(IaMP/SWR/Soku), both IaMP and SWR got an update due to the sheer scale of the projects involved. Like, each of them easily had as much content as all the ZUN games since MoF combined, if not more. Soku had only a few minor text issues and one misplaced BGM title that couldn’t have been too important as only like three people have noticed, none of which were the 15ish testers, so an update was not really high priority. (All I really want to fix is the moji’d profile names, anyway.) All of these projects were goddamn huge and I think people really underestimate how much work went into them.(For reference, IaMP had 426 edited images, SWR had 319, Soku had 313. Soku had over 420 win quotes and probably around as many spellcard names/descriptions. This isn’t even going into the story scripts…) Huge.

As far as releasing the tools go… Like, personally, I’m not involved with the ZUN games, so I don’t have any say on that. I’m not necessarily against it as I’m a big proponent of open source everything, but my code isn’t really documented or written with other people or maintenance involved, and I wouldn’t feel right releasing anything that hacky. But I don’t really want to spend the extra effort on it without good reason, and don’t have any at the moment. If you have some questions on how to do stuff, that’s cool, I’m usually willing to answer how stuff works to someone level-headed.

But, in the end, a request like “your patch is okay, but we think we can do better, so can you give us your tools?” kinda bugs me on some level. It’s not like they haven’t been willing to answer stuff, so if you have legit complaints, bring them, don’t park them on your own forums or cliques if you don’t want to work with the gs.org guys. Honestly, the hardest thing is not the work itself but getting people to actually tell you what they feel the problems are, instead of just cracking jokes behind your back or saying how incredibly awful you are because you missed one or two things. This crap takes a lot of effort and playing social engineering or petty politics is something absolutely no one wants to do.

    September 11th, 2010 | 3:47 pm

You’re misinterpreting me. I’m not saying to give me your tools so I can do it better. I’m asking that we make this a joint effort, perhaps taking votes on which translations or images to use, and taking the best aspects of both teams’ work. For something like this, a team effort will make the patch better, not erase all your work. I’m not doing this as a competition or saying “our patch will be better.”

  38. mauve
    September 11th, 2010 | 4:46 pm

We all want better work, but the organizational issues are important too.

gs.org runs under the benevolent dictatorship method, and this is most likely not going to change, mostly because IT ACTUALLY WORKS. It gets patches completed in a timely fashion with a good minimum baseline quality level. Maybe they’re not perfect. But it’s functional, which is more than you can say for a *LOT* of groups, many of which get bogged down trying to be too perfect, or have too many organizational disagreements about how ‘x’ or ‘y’ should be. This is a lot of why I work with them and not with the myriad of other groups out there. You really have to realize that they’re not going to change something that works, and really, why the hell should they?

So, given that, how do you propose this joint effort should work out?

Once again, not at all against suggestions or help or anything, in fact plenty welcoming of them, but asking them to change things up because a parallel group came around is kind of unreasonable to say the least.

  39. Azure Lazuline
    September 11th, 2010 | 5:39 pm

First off, I’d like to say that I’m perfectly fine if this doesn’t work out, since like I said, the patch is great as it is, and you guys do great work. But since it’s already done, taking too long for perfection issues isn’t a problem – there’s already a working patch, so it’s not delaying anything.

Is there a leader of this project? You’re listed for code work, but there’s no mention of who’s the leader, if there is any (and there’s not a topic for this at the forums as far as I can tell). I’d like to get more than one opinion on this, at least.

If one or two more people say no, then I’ll be quiet about this, but it was worth a shot. I just wanted to be helpful, that’s all. I figured that improving the quality of the patch would be a good thing, even if this isn’t your usual way of doing things. I understand if you just want to stick to tradition, though.

Also, the reason I asked for the code (or at least the method) was that so other translations or edits would be easier to create. Once a patch is out, there’s going to be less people willing to do the code work that someone else has already finished, and it doesn’t hurt anything to release it… but I’m a fellow programmer myself, so I definitely understand if you want your work to be closed-source, and I won’t push the issue.

Thanks for at least considering this, by the way.

I do want to thank everyone behind this great patch. I’t doesn’t really matter if there are some mispelling errors, it was the first time I played GFW and I hardly notice them anyway (dodging everything while freezing bullets is enough brain work to notice such little things like that). It was just great, really, thank you guys so much!

I know translating a game means lots of work and requires time, patience and love for what you’re doing. It’s obvious that you guys love Touhou the same way we all do, and as a humble TH fan I do appreciate your work and time from the deep of my heart.

Thanks again Gs.org team, you guys are really amazing, seriously.
Please keep up that excelent work, on behalf of every TH fan here in Chile who appreciates your hard work, thanks you guys so much!

Other than some odd grammar in a few places (“Barely a Victory”? Why not “Narrow Victory”?), and the floating text for score items left untranslated, this patch is awesome.
