I noticed that people were confused about the 4 panel jokes involving Yuyuko in Love Indian Dolls [Complete]. Does anyone have the original pages that they’d be willing to put up somewhere that I can take a look?

Here’s a thread archive that someone generously made:

It’s not always up, so please don’t worry if you can get in. Try again later.

Thank you Ruka for the link.

As for the first 4-panel Yuyuko, I believe the joke has to do with the onomatopoeia that a person makes as he slips and falls. The pun might have to do with the Engrish (that’s right, engrish) equivalent of “catch onto me” hence Yuyuko’s pose in the first 3 panels. The other joke here has to do with the idea of “old”. Old people stereotypically make a lot of bad puns.

As for the 2nd 4-panel Yuyuko, there are two jokes here. The first joke has to do with what Yuyuko says in the first panel. It could mean many things. The translation says “racer hundred”.

レーサー : laser, racer [I’m more inclined to believe that it is laser]
    ひゃくう: jade, hundred, white

It’s even possible that hyakuu is supposed to be two separate words, one of which means “eat”.

I think the general idea is that it’s an obscure pun. As for the 2nd joke, Yuyuko’s final pose as she says “life!” is supposed to mimic the kanji: 命

My opinion is that the translator/editor should have left the kanji in there and attach a footnote explaining what the kanji meant.

Ah, thanks for clearing that up.

However, the editor for that doujin is not affiliated with us, and we have no idea where he is. On the other hand, a separate info page can be made. Check on it in about 6hrs from this post.

Gachon (and the grabbing motion) is an old Krazy Kats gag. According to Hatena, one of the members thought it up while he was reaching for mahjong tiles. As far as I know it’s just a nonsense word, but if what Hatena says is true, your interpretation might not be far off. The joke is that Yuyuko has been dead for a long time, so her sense in gags is old, and ガチョン is an old (1970s?) joke.

Clearly, you people have never played Beatmania!

    Solamarle:
Yes, I realized that Gachyon was a gag from a 60s band after I had submitted my comment. Thing is, most other times that I’ve seen/heard of the phrase used was when the situation involved a quick strike to grab something and being silly about it. It’d be the Japanese equivalent of the nonsense word “yoink!” used in American comics and whatnot. I guess what threw me off was Yuyuko’s pose. A static pose and nothing to strike at does not make for good use of the gag.

I’ve never played Beatmania, seeing as how my school as a DDR machine that I play on for free.
