Touhou NES ROM Hacks
For this update, we have a slightly unusual one, in the form of Rom Hacks, or patches for several NES Roms that convert them to something a little more related to Touhou.
First up, we have the conversion of Elevator Action, an old arcade game involving action and elevators, unsurprisingly.
Yes, that’s right, Eientei Action, featuring Reisen Udongein Inaba as the main character, presumably sneaking into Eientei which seems have have magically gained a large amount of Elevators and Escalators, The aim is to get to the bottom without being shot by the constantly appearing rabbits or plummeting to your doom.
I believe you have infinite ammo, so feel free to fire away at Tewi and co.
Next up, we have an edit for the fairly well known game, Ice Climber, as most recently seen in Smash Bros. where the game revolved around, as again the title suggests, climbing a mountain. Although for the edit, we have a character that doesn’t make all that much sense.
Alice! She’s well known for her climbing expeditions and encounters with ice-related things! Anyway, the premise is the same, climb to the top of the mountain while avoid everything, since they kill you. Instead of seals, we have a group of Cirnos and the bird monster has been changed to Mystia.
So, what would cause Alice to brave the fierce frozen mountains, the swarms of 9s and Night Sparrows and to wield a hammer good enough to make Tewi proud?
As usual, Marisa’s stole the precious thing.
Finally, we have SonSon, which I hadn’t heard of before, but it’s a side-scrolling game where you jump around between levels killing the enemies while constantly moving forward, as for the Touhou variation, we have MyonMyon.
The game starts with an extremely short scene where Youmu, Chen and three others, who I presume to be Ran, Yukari and Yuyuko are standing together, until someone, who appears to be Lunasa Prismriver swoops down and steals Yukari, Ran and Yuyuko, and so Youmu and Chen set off on their quest for vengeance and to retrieve their loved ones.
Soon enough, you’re being attacked by groups of enemies, such as the Prismriver Sisters, Lily Whites, Wriggle Nightbugs, Rumias, not to mention the Cirnos and Mystias are back from Alice de Climber, obviously not happy about the hammering they got. Luckily, you’ve got quite a good ranged attack, which means that you can take most enemies out with ease, be care though, since they can jump up or drop down and hit you.
The games that have the edits aren’t terribly involving or have much depth, but they’re nice to kill some time every now and then and who knows what games they may convert to Touhou in the future.
