Touhou 12.5 Announced!

e0088742_4313276

ZUN announced the new Touhou game, numbered 12.5, in an announcement on his official website today.

Translation:

It’s been a while.

This is the new game out out for sale Reitaisai (14.3.2010), Touhou Project 12.5: Double Spoiler ~Touhou Bunkachou.

This is the second installment of Touhou Bunkachou (Shoot the Bullet), which I think of as more of an extra than a full game.

This game will torture you with so much danmaku that even if you thought, “Forget stories or development or anything, I just wanna kill time with a short minigame,” you’ll spend hours slaving away, loving every moment.

If I had to explain the story, it’d be something along the lines of “Aya Shameimaru, Tengu Reporter, persistently takes photos of humans and youkai and whatever else and records them in her list of defeated enemies.”

Using tengu power, taking a photo of danmaku will make the danmaku disappear; use this ability to dodge the enemy’s danmaku. The game definitely has strong puzzle game elements.

All characters and scenes featured in Touhou Bunkachou ~Shoot the Bullet will return for this second installment, along with brand new content! On sale for 1,000 JPY at the Shanghai Alice Ensemble booth at Reitaisai for 1,000 JPY! Please take a look if you’re interested.

I feel much better now.

*Note: This game is pretty difficult to clear compared to other games, so please train yourselves.

    I bet some people will still clear this game the very same day they buy it/get their hands on it. Not saying these people are normal though, they must surely be Youkai.

    This is absurd. I’m thoroughly disappointed. Why do game makers of bullet games even bother making stuff that’s literally impossible to complete? *record of StB for this poster, over 999 times past each of Stage 4, and no clear yet*

    Aww, I was looking forward to some new characters…. Hope this game turns out good, but I still was wishing for a game with an engine that was either completely new or had some PC-98 features. Wonder if any retro characters made it in; guarantee this one will have the most extensive cast of any games so far though :) .

  29. Whinette
    March 3rd, 2010 | 8:00 am

    @Cassie, cba, or :effort: ?
    It’s easier (bar some) then most lunatic / extra stage of the other games. Mainly because you just can try and try again without discontinuation.
    I’m not an expert, I think I’m pretty average for a shmup player. I don’t clear any extra (because I cba tbh). But I do pretty well on StB.

    Tbh, I don’t play that much at the new games, because the stages, with all the trash fairies, are boring me. I like the games for the boss battles. =) So, I mainly play the old games on spell practice (I’ll beat the spell 215 of IN one day~).
    StB2 is a good thing for me, because it’s a resume of what I love much than the rest.

    And if it was easy, it’s not interesting. Think the games like that : stages 1~3 are easy mode, stages 4~6 are normal mode, stages 7~8 are hard, stages 9~10 are lunatic and stages EX are extra.
    More sense that way, nope? ;)

    Oh and, don’t troll me on my grammar, I know it’s bad, I’m not a native english speaker (in fact I’m from the worst country for foreign language).

    Is ZUN serious? He’s going to make another game like StB?

    The first one was like playing UFO, on Lunatic, with no extra lives. I don’t understand how anyone found the original game to be anything other than a ridiculous festival of frustration, and I am definitely not looking forward to this one.

    I suppose I had better get around to hacking StB though, before this second garbage game somes out.

    @Whinette: don’t count out a phantasmagoria, those are usually full releases instead of “extra” ones… (they get a whole number instead of the decimal tacked onto the previous one) I’m thinking we’re about due for one, either this year or next.

  38. Darkagma
    March 4th, 2010 | 10:31 am

    @Anonymous

    well, it depends of your concept of a “catgirl”

    if you are talking about “a girl that uses cat ears as an accessory”, then it’s perfectly fine…

    however, Orin is a Nekomata (or Kasha, as written in touhou wikia…). Nekomata is a type of youkai.

    as a youkai, it seems to me that a cat youkai would not need 4 functional ears (humanoid ears are an exclusive feature of the primate…)

    for me, just cat ears are good enough. Chen doesn’t need additional ears to look cute :D

    Oh…that was Shou. XD
    OMG I LOVE SHOU’S LASERS! :D Now I’m super excited! Just so long as she’s in one of the earlier levels and I can actually get to her… XD

  43. Darkagma
    March 4th, 2010 | 9:20 pm

    @Askeladd

    (about reply 40)
    In fact, I was a really hasty saying that Rin is a Nekomata. As specified in touhou wikia, it really says that it is a Kasha (although its written that there is a possibility that she is in fact a Nekomata. I don’t know if there is more reliable information in the japanese wiki or from ZUN himself).

    At http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_mythology_in_popular_culture you will find a phrase saying that she might be both of them. I think that it’s possible because Orin also have 2 tails, found on Nekomatas. I think Kasha could be more sort of a profession as a corpse-shipping cat.

    Therefore, I could say that Orin is a Nekomata AND a Kasha as well…

    (about reply 41)

    As said above, Kasha and Nekomatas seem to have different meanings. Still, I haven’t found good sources of information about the true meaning of Kasha, as Google shows a lack of information about the topic. Touhou wiki only says that they carry corpses in some situations…

    But I think that Kashas still “evolve” from normal cats, giving them no purpose to get humanoid ears. They might have cat-like features, but it doesn’t mean at all that they should have humanoid features as well (although lots of other youkai seem to have humanoid features, but that’s another history)…

    If you have any source of good information about the true nature of Kashas, please share with me/us. The ears of the four-eared catgirl always bugged me and I’ve never had a good opportunity to think about it…

    Damn, I took to long to say what I wanted to. Sorry for the bad English (not a native speaker) and for those that consider this a pointless discussion (playing too much Ace Attorney).

    Also, orange band Haruhi-much? XD

  49. March 5th, 2010 | 7:56 pm

    Firstly, enough with “herp de derp Haruhi armband”: those armbands are not uncommon, and that one is in katakana (though too small for me to read).

    For those whining about difficulty, see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2tCJjZ56AE and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iUMS_-LvP9M.

    It’s all about reading the patterns and finding a solution to defeat them; be ready to sacrifice safety for information a few times, even if it’s in that already hard to get to stage halfway.

    I was hoping for this, and it’ll suffice to say I’m going to enjoy the fuck out of this.

    I could only be happier if ZUN manned up and released a GNU/Linux binary.
    Or better yet, the source – with those delicious comments about Gensokyo that get thrown away by the stupid compiler.

    also, lol Parsaya

    Are you dumb or something? Since when are armbands exclusive to Haruhi? I guess that would make Hitler part of the SOS gang.

    Armbands are commonly used by journalists, reporters, and other members of the press to state their status, affiliation, and as a press badge.

    For the record, I still haven’t 1CC’d SA or UFO on normal (I have on every other game), but I still rather enjoy STB. It might be hard as hell, but at least you don’t have to restart after 15 minutes of work just because you lost a life or two and know for a fact that you cannot beat Stage 5/6 without a bunch of lives to spare. I think I’ve currently put in around a hundred attempts at Remilia Stoker, but you know what? That took about the same time it takes to get violated by Shou a couple times and ragequit. If anything it is vastly less frustrating.

    Its more like playing UFO, on hard, with infinite lives, infinite bombs, and you get to skip the stages and go right to the specific card you want to clear. Sounds more like he’s handing you a way to get better at the game on a silver platter.

    New StB!? That’s wonderful!

    First StB was one among rare games were one can actually feel their mind evolving/adapting to the challenge. The feeling of being confused with Stage 1, beating Stage 4 much later and then laughing at yourself in amazement when you look back at Stage 1 to see how easy it seams after all that is priceless. This applies more or less to other stages and Touhou games ofc.

    I hope the next one is a phantasmagoria.

    @57:

    Yep, my guess would be the graphics card. My computer is from 2001 and was using onboard graphics, and I was only able to get between 35-40 fps on EoSD…PCB was lucky to have 25fps, usually closer to 10-15fps…the rest were either totally unplayable or would crash before starting.

    I found an NVIDIA GeForce 6200 (PCI, so it wasn’t as powerful as the AGP ones…but I don’t have AGP on this thing) card on Amazon for about 40 bucks. Popped it in, I can play all the main games at nearly a full 60fps (on UFO it hovers between 45 and 58, IIRC). I really underestimated how powerful that card is, because I didn’t think it would do that much, seeing as how it’s something like five years old. But from the specs on the Wiki, It should also be capable of playing Double Spoiler properly too.

    Just did a quick check, actually. Running UFO at 960×720 while Firefox (3 tabs open) and Winamp are both running, I was getting a solid 58/59 fps on Stage 1. So yeah, that card is more than powerful enough. I’d be a little hard-pressed on SWR or Hisoutensoku, simply because I’ve only got 512MBs of RAM and they require 1 GB.

    >i also would love to see him take advantage of Dx10 and soon to be out Dx11 platform for building games

    And I would love to see you shut up and stop spewing nonsense like a tool.
    If you’re going to go graphics whoring, I don’t have a clue what are you even doing looking at Touhou.

    If anything, ZUN should stop using DirectX entirely and start doing OpenGL, so that he would not be automatically shackled to a single platform.
    I’d be delighted if he’d release his games for GNU/Linux, but I know far too well that he’d rather go out for a beer than learn something new like that.
    Plus, he doesn’t give a damn.
    I’ll keep hoping for the day when I don’t have to keep a copy of Windows around for the sole purpose of playing his games.
